Over the years that I’ve been in practice it honestly feels like there has been endless controversies and Chiropractic myths purported that are both harmful for our reputation and standing within the community. It’s almost like these myths take on a life of their own like a game of Chinese whispers!  At Vitality Chiropractic Australia we pride ourselves on being up front with our many clients by providing effective, evidence-based facts, not opinion!

Despite the rigorous training and education that Chiropractors receive there are still many misunderstandings about Chiropractic care and how we help individuals suffering from an array of musculoskeletal problems.

Chiropractic Myths: “Chiropractic Care Is Dangerous & You Shouldn’t Have Them Touch Your Neck!”

Hands up if your family GP has ever said this to you? I’ve honestly run out of fingers to count the amount of times I’ve had a client seek clarification about this after they recently visited their general practitioner. With all treatment there are inherent risks that practitioners and clients must be aware of. Having said this, when Chiropractic management is performed by a competent practitioner who has appropriately assessed a client with all necessary neurological and orthopaedic tests than treatment is extremely risk free and non-invasive. Just for good measure, next time you speak with your GP ask them what the side effect rate of from taking prescription anti-inflammatory medications. It may interest you to know that they’re much more dangerous than Chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Myths: “My Friend Told Me That Chiropractic Adjustments Are Painful”

Yes, Chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy may be uncomfortable but rarely is it painful. It really depends on that state that you’re visiting your Chiropractor. Are you walking in with a limp and severe pain? Or jumping for joy that you’re due for your regular check-up?

Chiropractic Myths: “Chiropractors Are Only Good For Back Pain”

It would be extremely disappointing if I spent five years of dedicated full-time study, and spent nearly $100,000 on a HECS debt to find out I was only good enough to manage back pain. What a bummer. Luckily this is not the case, Chiropractors are regularly sought after for problems ranging from headaches, migraines, carpal tunnel syndrome, sports injuries, disc injuries, neck pain, spinal stiffness, degenerative joint disease and much more! As well as providing effective hands on manual therapy, Chiropractors may provide tailored and specific advice in other aspects of your general wellbeing such as nutrition and exercise prescription.
