Chiropractic is a form of complimentary health care that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment & ongoing prevention of neuromusculoskeletal disorders and their effects on an individual’s general wellbeing & overall health. Neuromusculoskeletal what? Simply put, these are problems within the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems of the human body which can ultimately cause pain by disruptions in the normal function of joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons & nerves.

In order to treat these problems, Chiropractors are trained in a variety of techniques. At Vitality Chiropractic Australia our doctors are qualified in techniques including (but not limited to): manual adjusting (Diversified & Gonstead), Atlas Orthogonal, gentle low force Activator methods, Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP), Webster (pregnancy) technique, Sacro-Occipital technique (SOT), flexion-distraction therapy, sports and extremity techniques as well as paediatric and childrens health.

So how do these techniques help relieve your pain in the short term and keep you feeling well? Most of us have experienced back or neck pain at some point in our lives, so lets use these as an example.

When a spinal joint is injured it moves out of its normal position, the ligaments that help support the joint become over-stretched sending off nerve pain signals to the brain telling it that something is wrong! As a result, you brain tells the muscles around this area to tighten in order to help protect the area from further damage, unfortunately this muscle tightening and spasm quite often causes more pain, discomfort & stiffness. In addition, as the joint moves out of its normal position it may place torsional stress on the discs that help provide cushioning between each vertebrae or put direct pressure on the spinal nerves (i.e Sciatica). Now remember all those techniques that our practice specialises in….we use this techniques to firstly realign the injured joint, this in turn reduces tension of the over-stretched ligaments. Once your brain stops sensing those nasty pain signals the muscles around the area begin to relax and return to their normal state and you can get back on track enjoying the good things in life!
