What Is Melbourne IASTM Massage Treatment?

IASTM (instrument assisted soft tissue massage) is a manual therapy technique used by Chiropractors, Physiotherapist’s, Osteopaths, Myotherapist’s, Massage Therapist’s and various other allied health professionals that uses specialized tools to aid in the treatment of soft tissue disorders. The primary goal of IASTM is too:

  • Break down scar tissue and adhesions in muscle, tendon & fascia
  • Increase blood flow by promoting circulation to improve healing
  • Reduce musculoskeletal pain associated with tendonitis, strains, sprains & joint problems
  • Improve range of motion by loosening treated structures to enhance flexibility

IASTM massage tools are typically stainless steel that the practitioner uses to create friction or deeper pressure onto the skin and beneath structures.

Is IASTM Evidence Based?

During instrument assisted soft tissue massage there are various physiological processes that occur including cellular exchange, vascularization and reorganization of collagen fibres.

  • Cellular exchange involves the transpotation of cells passing in and out of tissues. The friction created by IASTM against soft tissue structures causes increased blood flow and cellular movement. This process of cellular exchange is important to remove waste products and toxins. This process replaces the damanged cells with oxygenated healthy cells. An increase of healthy cells in tissues also increases nutrients and can help repair damaged tissue.
  • Vascularization is the process of increased blood flow to an area. Vascular response is the reaction to injury. IASTM promotes an inflammatory cellular response and vasodilation (widening) of capillaries. This entire process delivers new oxygenated blood the area to encourage healing. Nutrients and minerals carried in oxygenated blood are essential for cell repair and growth.
  • Reorganization of collagen fibres is the removal of scar tissue and adhesions. Following injury or chronic soft tissue tightness the body attempts to repair the area by laying down scar tissue. Scar tissue can cause problems due to the uneven and haphazard layering over tissues. Scar tissue does not align correctly with direction of previous tissues. IASTM can break down restrictive scar tissue and re-align the collagen fibres into the direction of the normal tissue. Realigning restrictive tissue is important to restore movement and reduce pain.
